AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION
BASIC LIFE SUPPORT INSTRUCTOR COURSE

The following is information you will need to determine the kind of instructor course you wish to take.  An application will be found at the end of this section.


The Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider Instructor course and the Heartsaver Instructor course is designed to prepare AHA instructors to disseminate the science, skills, and philosophy of the resuscitation programs to participants enrolled in AHA courses. 


WE ONLY TAKE 4 - 6 PEOPLE IN EACH INSTRUCTOR COURSE
if you sign up for the Instructor course, you may cancel up until 2 weeks before the class.  If you cancel less than two weeks before the course, you will have to pay for another Instructor course.  We do not offer refunds if you cancel your spot less than 2 weeks before the scheduled Instructor course.

Lawson TEC will also provides group Instructor courses.  If a group of at least three people wish  to take an Instructor course, we can provide the course for you on a mutually determined date.  All of the following information will also apply to a group course.

BLS HEALTHCARE PROVIDER INSTRUCTOR COURSE


COST: 
 $250.00 and does NOT include course manuals ($100.00)
 

This course is designed for people who wish to teach Healthcare Providers - Nurses, doctors, ancillary Healthcare providers and anyone who works in a medical environment.  These instructors may also teach all Heartsaver courses, which includes Heartsaver CPR, Heartsaver AED and Heartsaver First Aid.

Instructor Candidate Prerequisites

Be identified as demonstrating instructor potential by showing:

       1.  A strong desire to teach       

       2.  Excellent BLS performance and problem-solving skills

       3.  Able to follow directions and follow through with tasks

       4.  Able to speak in front of a group

       5.  Current AHA Healthcare Provider card that has not expired

       6.  Be willing to come into the office of Lawson TEC for Skills check

             off, at least 30 days prior to the Instructor course

       7.  Be aligned with an AHA Training Center - You may affiliate with Lawson TEC.  Please read the Lawson TEC Policies and Procedures at the end of this section.

       8. Agree to teach a MINIMUM of two courses a year

       9. Provide a completed instructor candidate application (click on "W" icon at top of page)

      10. Complete the Core Instructor course prior to classroom day, either on-line through the American Heart Association website or with a CD Rom.  Registration Process

Once we have received the first four items on the following list of requirements, we will send you a letter giving you the information on how to order the instructor manuals and the Core Instructor Course workbook. The Core Instructor Course is an exercise that you must complete before the one-day classroom session.  Once you've completed the on-line exercise, you will print out the certificate indicating that you've completed it and bring that certificate to the Instructor course.
1.      Forward a brief statement as to why you wish to participate in this course

2.      Forward a check for the cost of the course made out to Lawson TEC Training Center

3.      Complete the AHA Instructor Candidate Application, with appropriate signatures

4.      Forward a copy of your current Healthcare Provider card (front and back)

5.     Come into Lawson TEC for skills check off.  Participant skills must be close to perfect, in order to take an Instructor course.

6.     Be willing to complete the Core Instructor course, either on-line or with a CD Rom and produce the completion certificate prior to the classroom portion of the course.
7.  Order your Instructor manual(s) and review them prior to class.  You must bring them to the Instructor course.

Monitoring and Mentoring

Each instructor candidate is required to be monitored teaching a Healthcare Provider course upon completion of the Instructor course.  The monitoring process is usually facilitated by your Training Center.  Course completion is not met until a satisfactory monitoring has been done.  A second and third monitoring may be required.  This is not recommended as a punitive measure, but as part of our mentoring process to ensure all instructors are proficient and feel completely comfortable to teach ALL BLS courses offered by the AHA.


HEARTSAVER INSTRUCTOR COURSE - The above dates apply 

COST:  $250.00 not including manuals ($70.00)

This course is for individuals who wish to teach Lay people - child care givers, security guards, Baby sitters, teachers, adult care givers.  Heartsaver Instructors cannot teach Healthcare Providers, only Non-healthcare providers.

     Requirements: 

   Be identified as demonstrating instructor potential by showing

       1.  A strong desire to teach       

       2.  Excellent BLS performance and problem-solving skills

       3.  Able to follow directions and follow through with tasks

       4.  Able to speak in front of a group

       5.  Be aligned with an AHA Training Center

       6. Agree to teach a MINIMUM of two courses a year

       7. Provide a completed instructor candidate application

       8. Current Adult and Pediatric Heartsaver AED card or Healthcare Provider card with the new 2006 Guidelines

       9.  Current Heartsaver First Aid course card 

      10.  Come into the office of Lawson TEC for skills checkoff

      11.  Complete the Core Instructor course on-line or with a CD Rom prior to the classroom portion of the course. 
      12.  Order your Heartsaver Instructor Manual and review it prior to the course

LAWSON TEC TRAINING CENTER POLICY

FOR INSTRUCTORS

  Lawson TEC is one of the largest and most respected Training Centers for CPR training.  Over 70 instructors keep their records with us.  For that privilege, instructors must agree to the following:
  •        Current Instructors: 
    Agree to be monitored in a teaching environment by a designated Lawson TEC Training center Faculty
  •      Agree to follow the Policies and Procedures of Lawson TEC
  •      Agree to keep your instructor information (phone, address, email) current or inform LT of changes
  •      Agree to follow the guidelines of the American Heart Association
§         Instructor Candidates:  Agree to a two-step monitoring process after you’ve completed your Instructor Course.  The first is to observe a class being taught by another instructor.  The second is to be lead instructor, using the watch-then-practice video and demonstrating skills when required.  Any step may be repeated, as necessary.
§         Agree to attend a mandatory instructor update annually.
§         Agree to teach once a year in the office for monitoring purposes.
§         Agree to pay an $85.00 annual membership fee
§         Turn in rosters within two weeks of a course you’ve taught in order to receive cards.
§         Agree to pay $5.25 per card roster fee.
§         Agree to follow the guidelines established by the American Heart Association.
§         Agree to participate in American Heart Association activities.
§         Subscribe to CURRENTS MAGAZINE
LAWSON TEC agrees to:
§         Communicate with instructors at least quarterly and more often, as neededthrough email, primarily.
§         Maintain current instructor records for three years
§         Forward instructor records to another training center, once appropriate paperwork has been submitted to us
§         Issue new Instructor cards, once instructor has fulfilled teaching requirements
§         Participate in conflict resolution meetings, when problems occur.  If disputes cannot be resolved, Lawson TEC will take the matter to the Regional Service Center for further action, if necessary.
